Do I volunteer in the schools already?

My wife, Candice, and I are very engaged in Norfolk Schools! We advocate on the city level for increased funding and support for teachers by attending and advocating at all budget hearings for the last several years, and we dive in with our kids' PTA organizations.

I am a Watch D.O.G.S. volunteer, a fantastic program that puts dads in the elementary classroom as helpers, and I've coordinated the brick and old building salvage for Larchmont Elementary School as a PTA fundraiser. My wife is the chairman of PTA Reflections, and I've helped with securing judges and handling collection, transport, and organization of the entries. I've volunteered as an advocate and supporter for Norfolk GAINS and the Proudly Diverse Caucus as a volunteer cameraman for the latest round of forums in the last school board elections. I've served on the the Gifted Education Advisory Council for NPS for the last two years. I also volunteered as a voice for community input at the latest round of #NPSRefresh meetings regarding building use and capacity.

I visit the Virginia legislature in Richmond several times a year to advocate for/against different bills impacting education as well as for changing the VA funding formula for education. I have written several extended, researched, and scholarly papers regarding educational finance and the Virginia funding of education, and I am very well versed in the creation of school division budgets and allocation of funding at the city level. My volunteer efforts matter the most to me as an engaged father and homeowner in Norfolk.
