Where do you teach?
I'm a lifelong Norfolk resident and Norfolk native. When I started teaching, I applied to Norfolk, and there were no music positions available (sort of a different situation from being a grade-level teacher or a math teacher). After spending a year and a half with the Governor's School for the Arts teaching the Jazz Ensemble and Saxophone Ensemble, I went to two Title-1 elementary schools in Hampton and taught for the jazz studies program at First Colonial High School all at the same time. Through my work with the jazz program, I was recruited as a music specialist in VA Beach to an elementary program at Malibu Elementary where I've developed a quality music program over 15 years working in regular and special education fine arts instruction. I'm bringing my years of experience in building programs and writing curriculum to Norfolk as a school board member and experienced teacher, teacher mentor, and proud product of Norfolk Public Schools in support of our great educational system. School board policy states that no employee of Norfolk Public Schools is allowed to serve on the school board.
